Chatsworth Christmas Market

Leader: David

After a dull and wet November it was a delight to see the re-appearance of the sun today.
The Chatsworth Christmas Market has been hit by the weather this year – but it has given the chance for many to experience the joys of walking to the event rather than having to practice mud-driving skills in the Park.

This morning’s walk set out from the Robin Hood Inn and followed the ridge to the Hunting Tower before descending to the Market.
After a bit of retail therapy and mulled wine it was a return via a completely empty Hulley’s 170 bus at Baslow’s Nether End.

Mosborough

More grim November weather.

Only four on this walk today.
Not as much rain as forecast, but a swollen river and brooks, submerged stepping stones, and fords where there aren’t usually any confirm the ground is absolutely saturated.
Obviously no shortage of mud.

A break in the mist for a glimpse of the Boxing Glove Stones on Black Ashop Edge

Seven of us did this walk (revised to take account of extremely wet conditions underfoot).
We turned south at the Old Woman post on the Doctor’s Gate path to negotiate the flag stones on the Pennine Way to Mill Hill rather than the soggy peat of Bleaklow.
A descent by the Snake Path.
The weather was mild and the edges were somewhat shrouded in mist.

North Chesterfield Way

North Chesterfield Way route

Today, eight group members followed a linear, slightly shorter eight mile, route based on the North Chesterfield Way.
Starting from Chesterfield Town Hall and leaving the residential suburbs behind the group first made their way through Holmebrook Valley Park where the few remaining leaves provided a little colour in the subdued light of late autumn.
A short stop in Cutthorpe for coffee, then on to Barlow, and a short diversion through Barlow Lees before rejoining the North Chesterfield Way near Lees Wood.
On reaching Dronfield the whole of the group rounded off the day with a very leisurely tea and cake stop at The Barn.

Derbyshire Gritstone Way (1)

Leader: Val

The Derwent, angrier than usual, at Darley Abbey

The 56 mile Derbyshire Gritstone Way (as opposed to the Cheshire/Staffordshire Gritstone Trail) was developed by Derbyshire Ramblers in the 1970’s to follow the eastern gritstone ridges between Derby and Edale.
Our walk following the first ten miles was made within days of the flooding of the Lower Derwent.
Consequently part of it passing from Derby through the Derwent flood plain was somewhat wet.

Darley Abbey

On to higher ground north of Breadsall conditions improved, with a more pleasant walk via Little Eaton (for a lunch stop), Holbrook, and Duffield to catch a ‘Sixes’ bus on the A6 in Milford returning to Derby.
Nine of our group on the rain-free walk.
More sections to follow.

Beeley

Leader: Sara   Photos: Mel

Four members completed a slightly shortened Saturday walk and were rewarded with sightings of fungi, vividly autumn coloured trees, and a fine inversion layer view from the Hunting Tower in Chatsworth.
The walk was completed with a leisurely visit to the fine cafe at Beeley for tea, cakes, and scones.

Heading past the Hundall TV masts

A grey November day for 13 on an enjoyable local Old Whittington circular, heading up to Hundall and back.
Fortunately back at the Revolution House before the threatened afternoon rain arrived.
