Clay Cross Heritage Walk

Leaders: Michael & Val

A small group of five for the Clay Cross Heritage Walk on a dry morning. Though we walked less than three miles there was plenty of interest – including the castellated tunnel, a blue plaque , varied housing and other significant buildings of the busy railway and mining times and memorials, old and new.
We finished with a visit to St Bartholomew’s Church to look at the William Morris window.
All fairly local members but we discovered something new.

Chatsworth Way

Leader: David

Another ‘Clarion’ Festival walk – this one following a ‘West Chesterfield Way’ out to the Chatsworth Estate and the wider Peak District.
A quiet journey across Holy Moor, Eastmoor, and Beeley Moor.
There, from the ‘hobgoblin’ of Hob Hurst’s House we descended to the Halloween celebrations in a busy half-term Chatsworth.
Two non-members fully appreciated the journey.

Canals, Coal, Railways, & Regeneration

Leader: David

David comments on a ‘Clarion’ Festival walk ;

I enjoyed today’s walk and think that the eight who joined me did too.
Our seven mile route, with a coal and canal theme, took us over generally familiar paths in a well trodden area.
I was pleased though that I was able to show each of the participants something new.
We started from Hollingwood Hub, on a bright sunny day, then followed the canal to Staveley Basin, and on past the current restoration site – still partly flooded due to the recent heavy rain.
Our route took us to Netherthorpe, where we had a look at the original 1697 grammar school building and across to Poolsbrook for a lunch stop.
We returned through Eckington and looked at Staveley Hall, dating from 1604.
From there we took an overgrown and hardly known permissive path back down to the canal and on back to Hollingwood.

The Great Ridge above Edale

A lovely day’s walk after all the damp weather for the 17 who walked along the Edale valley and up onto Crookstone and Kinder Edge for lunch.

Lunch break at Jaggers Clough

Hard work done, there were great views along the Edge and on the descent down Ringing Roger, which took us back to Edale village.
